You are welcome to ask questions at any point, and nothing happens without your consent.

Your appointment usually starts with a conversation, not a procedure. Your GP will ask about your general health, any symptoms or concerns, and your health history, so they can recommend the right checks for your age and circumstances. If you are between 25 and 74 and have ever been sexually active, you are likely due for a Cervical Screening Test. According to the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, this test is done every five years and checks for HPV, a common infection linked to cervical cancer. You can choose to have your provider collect the sample, or in many cases, collect it yourself using a simple self collection swab.
If you are unsure which option suits you best, it is completely fine to ask your GP to explain both, so you can make the choice that feels most comfortable.
Depending on your age, your visit may also cover breast checks or a discussion about mammogram screening. According to healthdirect, the risk of breast cancer increases with age, which is why regular checks become more important over time. Your GP can talk you through what is recommended for your specific age group and risk factors.
Other checks that may come up during a visit include blood pressure, cholesterol, and general wellbeing screenings, particularly if it has been a while since your last check up.
One of the most important things to understand about a visit like this is that you are always in control of what happens. Your GP will explain each step before proceeding, and you can ask questions, request a female practitioner, or pause at any point if you feel uncomfortable. Nothing proceeds without your clear consent.
