Once the area is properly numb, a small elliptical incision is made and the entire cyst is removed. We are sure to remove its its outer capsule aswell which matters because leaving any part behind can mean it could grow back. The wound is then closed with stitches. The whole procedure takes around fifteen to twenty five minutes, and most people head home the same day.

For larger or more complicated cysts, or those that have been previously infected, procedures can take a little longer. That is why an initial assessment is always the first step in knowing which approach to take.

Does the Anaesthetic Injection Hurt?

The only real discomfort most people notice is a brief sting or pinch from the anaesthetic injection itself, similar to a normal needle. This lasts only a few seconds, and once the area is numb, the rest of the procedure is generally pain free in the traditional sense.

What Does It Feel Like?

Because the area is numbed beforehand, you should not feel sharp pain during the actual removal. Most people describe a sensation of pressure, pulling or gentle tugging as the cyst is freed and removed, rather than anything painful. Some people find this sensation a little strange, but it is not distressing once they know what to expect.

What About Afterwards?

Once the local anaesthetic wears off, usually a few hours later, mild soreness or tenderness around the area is common. This is generally manageable with simple over the counter pain relief and tends to settle within a day or two. Keeping the area clean and dry, and following any wound care instructions given at your appointment, helps reduce the chance of irritation while it heals. Stitches are usually removed within a week or two, depending on the location, and most people are back to their normal daily activities well before then.
